Van Tyres - The Breakdown
Van tyres have a very specific construction for high-stress usage of carrying heavy loads safely. The sidewalls are strengthened, and the internal layer known as the carcass will also be reinforced.
You can find out if a van tyre is designed for taking heavy loads by looking at the sidewall of the tyre. It will have an XL load index symbol on the side to show that it has been manufactured to take the extra weight.

Van Tyres In Use
Buying the correct van tyres at the right time is not the end of the story. Once your new van tyres are on you must make sure they are set at the correct pressure for the load they are carrying.
It is not just a safety thing either - it will save you money in the long run. Incorrectly inflated van tyres will wear out faster and adversely affect performance. Not only will you need to buy a new set more quickly, you will be using more fuel than is necessary as well.
Check the manufacturer guidelines for the correct air pressure. You may be surprised at the difference it makes.
Legal Requirements
Like all other tyres, van tyres must be replaced if they have reached the minimum tread depth level.
If you are a business running a van, you must make sure your van tyres are legal or you and your individual staff members may face prosecution.
By law, car and van tyres must have a minimum tyre tread depth of at least 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread around the entire circumference. For heavy vans above 3,500 kg GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight), the truck tyre minimum tread depth of 1mm applies.
A driver breaking this law faces a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre. Businesses can be prosecuted for fitting illegal tyres too, the maximum penalty is currently £20,000.
